Instant World

What a world we live in.
I graduated high school in 1997 (yes i am that old…or young, depending on who is reading) and technology was just starting to blossom. I remember bragging to my friends that we had a 486 computer with 33 mhz…jealous?!? Dial up internet was the only way to go and my parents had a cool cell phone. It came in a large bag and required a small crane to transport everywhere. It also drained your car battery if you forgot to unplug it (sorry mom).

old bag phoneTimes have changed and things are not the way they used to be. Sending large files often meant saving a small fortune for Canada Post shipping costs and walking to the post office. Today to send large files is as easy as clicking “send”.

Back in the day (sounds old) if you wanted to share your information with others, you headed down the the community bulletin board and placed your information up for a few to see. Or you could use the newspapers and share with a broader network a week later. Today everything is online. On line billboards and e-newspapers have made sharing news and information simple and easy. Online file sharing has eliminated the need for inefficient ways of announcing information to a larger audience in a timely fashion.

Some may say this has caused our society to become more and more instant with everything. However, how many lives have been saved because doctors oceans apart can share new techniques and strategies to deal with trauma, sickness and effective treatment for example.

According to most, life is simpler, safer and easier. Although I miss the feeling of getting an actual letter in the mail, or snail mail as it is referred to now, I love that we can now share our feelings, information and idea’s in an instant.
