Our Home Renovation

About three and a half years ago we purchased a house, not just any house either. We bought my grandparents house that was built between 1923-1928.

Although the house needed and still needs a lot of work, it is the house I plan to live in for the rest of my life. Many of you followed our journey of our main floor renovation, we basically gutted the house and I got my dream kitchen.

Now that that project is complete we want to remove the summer kitchen that is attached (but basically falling off) the back of the house. Our plans include a den and grand entrance.  These are exciting times in our home.

We came to the conclusions that a den would be a great place for our family to gather and enjoy each others company for years to come.  This would be a place where our family could gather, along with friends, for years to come.  By having this place available, it is our hope that our children can utilize this place so they can have fun with our family and their friends.

Now as for the entrance, we feel that this is a key part of the home.  It is the first thing people will notice when they enter the home.  This is where first impressions are made, and we all know how important first impressions are.  By having a grand entrance you can have all those last minute chat that guests tend to have.  In my experience it is in these settings where meaningful conversations happen; and to me this is important to us and our guests.

To me, a part of having a grand entrance also includes a HUGE walk in closet. I have been searching for closet organizers and ideas to make my walk in closet be both functional and beautiful.

At this point we have talked to a few contractors and the bank and are in the process of trying to make our dream a reality.

So tell me, do you love your home entrance? What things should I not forget to have?

A closet is a must. I wouldn't ever want just an open area, because I know how cluttered it gets. Have hooks or a coat hanger, but just for guests. Have a table or cubbyhole where guests can drop their keys, sunglasses, wallets, purses on as they come in the door. And most importantly, space inside the door so that, if it is required in your house, more than one person can actually stand (or better yet, have a seat). I detest nothing more than people who have absolutely no room at their front door and yet give me the evil eye when I step on their floors with my shoes. That's my dream entrance. I also like the idea of having a bathroom nearby, but that is a lot bigger dream! ;)

Those are some great ideas that I will have to keep in mind for sure! Thanks for taking the time to comment!

Sounds like your home will be a beautiful home when complete. I love this about old homes is there is charm, a story behind them and more opportunity to make it your own. Our entrance is tiny so not real great, but the thing I do love is the 2 piece bathroom. So handy when you are out in the yard, especially with children since no shoes have to come off.

I love the charm of our home, thanks for leaving a comment...now if only I could get my little girl to actually close the door after going back outside from using the bathroom LOL.

I would say have a bench you can sit down on and takeoff those muddy shoes if iI had a biggger entrance with a toddler I know I would have one by my door. Plus a mirrow I could look in beforeeI head out.

oh I love the outside of your house, it's so cute! i do love our entrance, it isn't fancy but it's really wide and open and has double doors which are awesome for bringing in furniture or other large deliveries.

Ooh, I never thought about having double doors. We are planning for our entrance to be at least 8 feet wide, how wide is yours? Thanks for the commment :)

My dream entrance would have a small 2-pc bathroom, easily washable floors, and hidden storage - ie: closets, not just hooks. Love the house - love that you're keeping the old and adding the new!

Thanks for your comment. Since our bathroom now will be right next to the entrance I will not have to put one there, but I sure agree about hidden storage, that is a must! And thanks for the compliment about keeping the old and adding the new, I had poeple think it would not be a good idea, but I love it, and I guess that is what matters since I want to live here forever ;)
