If you are a parent or someone who is around children for any length of time, you are sure to know that kids have a fascination with toilet paper rolls. From pretend microphones to telescopes, the possibilities are endless.
The kids were BIG helpers in this fun DIY project.
How to make a Pencil Crayon Holder out of Toilet Paper Rolls
You will need:
- 9 toilet paper rolls (more or less is fine too)
- colorful paper (we chose to use colors to match our pencil crayons)
- clear tape
- paper clips
- scissors
- glue
- ribbon
First, you will need to select a paper to cover each toilet paper roll.
Next, you will need to tape the paper to each roll making sure to leave about 1 inch extra on the top of each roll.
Once they are all covered in paper, cut the 1-inch extra paper into strips as shown below.
Then you will want to glue the strips and fold them into the inside of the toilet paper roll. This will be the top. Do this for each roll.
Here I chose to put a piece of tape around the outside edge of the top of the roll just to give it a bit more durability.
Once that is done I put all the rolls in a row in the order I want them with the bottom of the rolls facing me. I slide a paper clip to attach the bottoms of all rolls.
Once they are all joined together, I carefully stand them up and weave a ribbon (or string) through to give it a bit of extra strength and to make it look a little prettier.
I come back from the other direction to complete the weaving.
Once again I carefully lay the rolls down and tie the ribbon/string tightly to the back.
While the rolls are laying down I place paperclips on the tops of each of the rolls to now secure them together.
Now comes the fun part….placing the pencil crayons in the holder.
(Note: there is no bottom on the holder. Since the pencil crayons face up and the holder is on a hard surface there is no need for a bottom…unless of course, you plan on moving it around a lot).
My daughter thinks this is the perfect addition to her craft desk! I’m sure glad we saved those toilet paper rolls!
You can see the real wooden pencil crayon holders I used in my Montessori home classroom when I was still teaching. This craft is a frugal way to create a similar pencil crayon holder.
