Canadian Colors Causing Confusion

We spent this past holiday Monday with my husband’s side of the family. Snow White loves to do activities while she is there.

She decided to color a picture of Canada. There was a little sticker on the top corner of the page which she used as a control of error…she was about half way done when it was time for us to leave.
When we got home Snow White quickly went to get her Puzzle map of Canada. She set it on the table and was about to resume coloring when she noticed that the colors in the sticker DID NOT MATCH the colors of her puzzle map.

She gently pushed her work away (I could tell she was feeling upset about this realization). I did not want to make a big deal about this, so I started to talk about the Olympics that are in Canada right now and asked her if she know where they were. She picked up the B.C. puzzle piece and so I used the opportunity to talk about the Olympics.

Have any of you experienced anything like this before? I was a bit shocked that she was bothered by this because many of our other materials have the same issue (our puzzle map of the world has different colors than our continent globe etc).

I would appreciate any feedback!

SkylarKD,

We actually did just that! It really helped!

Thanks for the comment!

No, she did not voice that observation about Nunavut.

I haven't encountered that with my daughter yet. It's great that she noticed the differences, though! I guess it could be an opportunity to show her a bunch of different maps with different colours and features (topographical maps, time zone maps, political region maps, population maps, etc.).

Out of curiosity, did she notice that her colouring page doesn't include Nunavut, while the puzzle does?

Hi. Sorry, I don't have a comment about your post. I saw on SITS that you have the same problem I do whereas your comment won't always post. Just thought I'd let you know you aren't alone in that.

Visiting from SITS.

Cheers :-)- CoconutPalmDesigns

stopping by from SITS - and I have to laugh, because my son who has autism is so colour oriented and pattern specific that it would drive him insane to have the two things be different... not that his map would be anywhere as neat as your child's.. we are still in scribble phase, but he is borderline OCD about playing with his toys and doing puzzles in order...

Love the teachable moments though!s

Hey didn't know where to leave a comment...just wanted to say thank you so much for the insight you offered at POM! Your comment really sat with me, probably because I could feel you empathy in your comment. Teaming up with someone is a wonderful idea...I think I will even consider that.

Thanks so much! Can't wait to check out your new blog with your new partner!
