Dear Children,

Summer break is finally here and while that is such a wonderful thing, there are a few things I must tell you.

You see, while the sun is shining and the birds are chirping, you are experiencing the freedom that you have been craving for a while.

No more pencils, no more books, no more heavy backpacks to cart home each and every day.

For those things, I am sure you are grateful.

AN OPEN LETTER TO MY CHILDREN ON SUMMER BREAK

The truth is though kids, summer isn’t always about constant freedom.

It is about doing our best with the time we have.

It’s about making the most out of every fleeting second.

Seconds that will be gone too fast, leaving us only with the memories of summer, sun, and fun.

School will be back on in no time, and as your parent, I am left to balance the summer months. Between work, childcare, summer chores, extracurriculars and more, it doesn’t always leave me with the abundance of time that I wish I could spend.

While I can take time off and plan our family time, the spontaneity isn’t always there.

The freedom you craved still presents itself on occasion, but you may be left adhering to yet another routine. There will probably be early bedtimes most nights, however, there will be times we can sneak away from the clock and retreat to the backyard to make s’mores.

I will make sure of that.

There will be times that we can throw caution to the wind and act silly in the sun.

I promise you that.

You see kids, while you get two months off school, while some families are going on large family vacations, while you crave the freedom of no schedule, I crave the same, but for me, it is not so cut and dry.

So, kids, let’s make the most out of this summer break.

While we still have routines and schedules let’s find the time to create memories like no other.

Let’s feel the sand between our toes at the beach, even if it is only for an hour.

Let’s build a fort in the living room and watch movies and play board games, even if it is only on the weekend.

Let’s laugh.

Let’s find joy in the chaos.

Let’s enjoy the summer break, even if it isn’t always what some would consider a break.

Let’s try to be grateful for the time that we do have, even without all the fancy big vacations and spontaneity.

After all, summer break can be so much more than just freedom from school.

Love always,

Mom

This was a great post and a great reminder to cherish every singe moment, life flies by so fast and before you know it they will be out on their own!

With the kids getting older, I find the summer days just slip past faster each year. I embrace and cherish every time they seek me out for a snuggle. I also try to swallow the lump in my throat when they say no to a snuggle when I offer.
