DAILY SUMMER ROUTINE FOR KIDS

When school ends, the normal day to day routines you once kept may fall by the wayside. In fact, they can be downright impossible to follow.

The truth is though, maintaining a daily summer routine for kids is important and while it may not be as strict as your school day routine, it still needs to be in place.

A daily summer routine can not only help to keep your kids on track, but it also helps to reduce the boredom complaints.

If you are looking for a great way to implement a routine over the summer months, you just have to get creative but also remember to leave a little leeway, after all, the summer months are referred to as summer break for a reason.

SET CLEAR GUIDELINES

One of the first things you can do when it comes to creating a daily summer routine is to sit down with your children and plan out your summer.

This can include planning things like summer camps, vacations, activities and swimming lessons.

Once those items have been planned, don’t forget to discuss what your everyday expectations will include.

This means discussing things like screen time and chores.

While these things may take some planning, especially if you don’t already have set limitations, they are important to talk about ahead of time.

Setting clear guidelines and expectations will help every day go smoother when your kids know what is expected of them in advance.

HAVE A FAMILY CALENDAR

Keeping track of everyone’s summer activities can become overwhelming.

This is where having a family calendar in place can help relieve some of that stress.

A family calendar is a great way to make sure you are managing all your commitments.

Use a large wall calendar and color code each member of the family to make keeping track of each person’s activities easier to follow.

This also helps you to get a better idea of what the entire month is going to look like and keeps you from overbooking.

KEEP A BEDTIME

If you have younger kids, you are going to want to ensure that they have some semblance of a bedtime routine, even through the summer months.

While it isn’t always possible to keep a strict bedtime through the summer, it is important to keep it as close as possible to the routine you keep throughout the school year.

The truth is, kids need their sleep and maintaining a routine will help to make the transition back to school that much easier.

CREATE A “DAY OF THE WEEK”

When creating a daily summer routine for kids, try choosing a theme or special activity per day.

SLOW-MOVING MONDAY

Spend the day recovering from the weekend. Play in the back yard, watch a movie, play with LEGO. Do something simple and relaxing.

TUTOR TRIP TUESDAY

Make Tuesday a learning trip day! Take a walk to your local library, visit the zoo, aquarium or walk to the park.

WHAT’S COOKING WEDNESDAY

Make something new in the kitchen. Have fun trying out a new recipe.

TRY A CRAFT THURSDAY

Try a new fun craft idea! Make play-doh. Make beaded necklaces. Draw/color with pencils and markers. Your local Dollar Store will have some great craft ideas.

FREE TIME FRIDAY

Do something fun – anything!

There are several ways to set out a daily summer routine for kids, just keep in mind that you can allow for some leniency but you also have to set clear guidelines, maintain a family calendar and try to keep a bedtime.
