4 TIPS FOR KEEPING KIDS SAFE ONLINE

Growing up 30 years ago, kids didn’t have access to all the new fancy gadgets and technology like kids growing up now do. In fact, many families didn’t own or have access to TV. When I was 2, I didn’t even know what a tablet or smart phone was. Now, a 2 year old knows how to operate any smart device and knows which way to swipe to find that video or game they are looking for.

But kids, of all ages, don’t know that while there are many fun and entertaining games and videos online, there is also a danger lurking. And as adults, it is our job to protect and educate the little ones!

4 TIPS FOR KEEPING KIDS SAFE ONLINE

NO ELECTRONICS BEHIND CLOSED DOORS

While many kids find it “cool” to have a TV and computer in their rooms, it is important for parents to know what there kids are watching and what they are doing on the internet. Having computers and TV in main, common areas of your home will help you monitor what your children are watching and seeing. It is also a great idea to set time limits on how long your child can be on the internet.

STAY “IN THE LOOP”

No parent wants to think about teenagers sexting or being cyber bullied. However, as parents we can help our kids by staying informed on the latest negative trends. Simply by watching the news you can find out what social trends (positive and negative) kids are facing today.

TALK TO YOUR CHILD

No one wants to discuss the dangers and “bad guys” out in the world. But as adults, it is important to talk to our children about the dangers of online relationships and sharing of personal information.

It is VERY important to talk to your child about their body and about sending personal pictures to those who have depicted themselves as “friends”.

START YOUNG

Kids as young as 8 need to understand the rules that you have set for your household. If they are old enough to use a tablet or computer, they are old enough to follow the rules you expect.

You can make a difference when it comes to keeping your kids safe online. Setting simple rules and keeping on top of social trends will help you help your kids stay safe.
