4 Ways Your Little One Can Make a Difference! Earth Day 2013 #Giveaway

First launched as an environmental awareness event in the United States in 1970, Earth Day (April 22) is celebrated as the birth of the environmental movement.

Environmental challenges abound as our daily actions pollute and degrade the fragile environment that humans and wildlife depend on to survive.

More than 6 million Canadians join 1 billion people in over 170 countries in staging events and projects to address local environmental issues.

In Canada, Earth Day has grown into Earth Week and even Earth Month to accommodate the profusion of events and projects. They range from large public events, such as Victoria’s Earth Walk (5,000 participants), Edmonton’s Earth Day Festival at Hawrelak Park (30,000 participants), and Oakville, Ontario’s Waterways Clean-up (2,000 participants) to the thousands of small, private events staged by schools, employee groups and community groups.

Earth Day seems like an adult themed day, but your little ones CAN make a difference!

4 Ways Your Little One Can Make a Difference on Earth Day!

Funkins

1) Replace paper for cloth ~ Napkins are a part of our everyday life.  Breakfast, lunch, supper, snacks our hands are bound to get dirty — especially kids!  Why not replace paper towel or paper napkins with cloth Funkins!  Funkins are an eco-fun way to reduce paper towels and paper napkins in lunch boxes.  Since paper towels are made from trees, the fewer we use, the fewer trees we need to cut down.  Funkins has many bright, cute, spring themed cloth napkins that are sure to spruce up ANY lunchbox or dinner table.  We have used Funkins at our dinner table and even the adults get a kick out of using brightly colored napkins.  In fact, have you ever noticed how paper napkins don’t stand up to ribs or wings?  Well Funkins napkins will!

2) Recycling ~ We have 2 bags sitting in our garage – 1 black (for garbage) and 1 blue (for recycling).  My kids know the difference and are quick to point out which items belong in which bag.  Another way you can recycle, is using an item for multiple purposes.  Re-using tissue paper or bags from past birthday presents is a great way to save money and the environment.

3) Clean up along sidewalks and yards ~ Every year, just after Earth Day, our city organizes a “Clean Up & Walk” event.  Everyone gets together and walks the streets, ditches and parks in our city, cleaning up garbage and getting our city spring-beautiful after a long Manitoba winter.  My kids are always picking up other people’s litter and while it kind of grosses me out, if they are wearing gloves I am okay with it.  Our family is signed up to participate in the “Clean Up & Walk” event this year.  Kids LOVE knowing that they are making a difference, especially in the city they live in.

4) Walk or bike to school ~ we are lucky enough to live close enough to the school to walk or bike (on days when it isn’t -40 or 70 kph winds!).  Our school also has “Walk to School” days, where they have designated meet up spots.  At a set time, the principal and several teachers will meet the children at the designated spot and they will all walk to school together.

Of course there are many more ways than these 4… turning off lights and appliances (tv, computer, etc.) when they are not being used is a great way to help the environment.  Also, turning off running water while brushing your teeth is a great tip to teach little ones.  My kids are great at reminding me not to leave the water running.
