5 tips to help kids get along {Peaceable Kingdom #Giveaway}

help kids get along

One of the biggest struggles I often hear about from parents is that they want advice and tips that will help kids get along with each other, especially among siblings.

Although I don’t believe siblings with get through their childhood years without a squabble, I do know there have been things that have helped our daughters learn to get along with one another.

5 Tips to help kids get along with one another

1.   Be who you want your kids to be – Parents have many responsibilities and we tend to get busy. If we are constantly telling our children to leave us alone or go do something else, they will tend to say those same things to their siblings. It is important for us to take the time to get down at our kids level and to remember to speak to them in the tone of voice that we would like them to speak to each other.

2.   Invest in toys and games that promote cooperative play – It’s good for children to learn to win together and lose together. Playing games that promote working together as a team can do wonders for children’s self esteem and help them to learn strategies that will transfer into regular play activities. My daughters particularly love The Great Cheese Chase and Hoot Owl Hoot which are 2 of the many cooperative games available from Peaceable Kingdom.

3.   Schedule regular family time – Often children will argue with each other purely to get attention from their parents. Kids crave attention, even if it is negative attention, so be sure that there is regular family time where everyone is free to talk, play and enjoy each others company.

4.   Act out situations that you Know Cause Conflict – Pretend play is valuable. If you know that every time you are packing up the kids to go for a drive that the children start fighting and try to be the first one into the car, practice how you would like it to go. Talk to your kids about how they think they could get into the car in a way that everyone would be happy. The more you discuss and practice troublesome routines, the more the children will think about what they are doing before acting out in a negative way.

5.   Know that you are not alone – When siblings are not getting along parents often tend to blame themselves or feel like they are the only one going through it. Remember, you are not alone. Take things moment by moment and give yourself some slack – being hard on yourself will not help the situation.
