No matter whether you are moving to a new home for work or relocating to be closer to family there are some important things to consider before moving to a new family home.

TIMING

During the summer is one of the busiest times of year to move.

Families with young children usually prefer to schedule their moves for when their kids are no longer in school.  The weather is warmer and there are more houses on the market.

It is important to note that while it may be more convenient for your family to relocate over those warm summer months, house prices are usually at their highest this time of year.

At this point, you must decide what is most important to you and consider the timing prior to committing.

AFFORDABILITY

There are many factors that come into play when you are trying to decipher if a property is affordable for you.

One thing is certain, however, the decision goes much further than what your mortgage payment will be.

Consider not only what you can afford now, but how well prepared you are to handle any unexpected events that could translate into costly repairs.

This will help you to decide if you are leaning more towards a new build, or older home to raise your family.

LOCATION

No matter if you are moving to a new up and coming neighborhood or an older well served community, it is important to think about a few of the following things to make sure you have access to everything you require:

  • How close to work, family, and friends you are.
  • Where the parks and hiking trails are situated.
  • The availability of nearby restaurants, shops, gyms, and banks.
  • Location of schools nearby.
  • What the property taxes, utilities, and other costs will be in the area.

Moving to a new family home can be an exciting adventure for everyone involved.

Just remember, it can also be a scary time.  If you are concerned about how your child will react, read one of these books with them:
