Teaching Kids to Cook #LMDconnector

Although February 18th was the “official” Family Day, we have a special family day every week. One of our favorite family activities is cooking together. We enjoy making homemade pizza, lasagna, tacos or burritos on Friday nights. Our 7 year old daughter Kate loves to make Guacamole to go with our meals or as an after school snack.

Kate’s simple guacamole recipe requires:

  • Avocado (mashed)
  • Chopped tomato
  • Splash of lemon juice
  • Celtic Sea Salt
  • Chips or crackers for dipping

Kate is a healthy eater. She does not like to eat sweets and she wants to be an example to other children. She asked me to record this little video for her telling kids why it is important that they learn how to make healthy snacks themselves. {It’s in both English & French}.

Teaching Kids to Cook:

Our 4 year old also loves to cook. She always wants to help her older sister prepare snacks.

She recently made a simple beef  lasagna which is a family favorite.  This traditional layered meal is an all in one meal that is a great hit.

I got all the ingredients ready for Jane and she put the lasagna together. She was so proud of herself and the whole family enjoyed her special meal.

Our basic lasagna includes:

  • pasta sauce
  • ground beef with taco seasoning
  • lasagna noodles
  • cottage cheese
  • egg
  • shredded cheddar & mozzarella cheese

I think cooking as a family is important. Not only is it fun (and a little messy), it is also a great life skill for children to learn at a young age.

If you find it overwhelming to cook with your children, start with something small and easy. As your kids get more opportunities to help they will learn and you will be surprised how helpful it actually can be to have the help.

Cooking and baking together has become one of our favorite family activities. We tell stories and jokes, we talk about our days and we just have fun making memories.

What did you do on family day?

It's always a pleasure to see them proudly smiles in offering us the meal they took part to prepare.

My hubby is the better cook than I am - he lets the kids help him prepare meals when he does cook - they have a blast!

I love to bake with my kids - that counts, right?!

Your daughter is adorable!

This is fantastic! I love that Kate did the little video. I will show it to my daughter who also loves to cook and loves anything to do with avocados:) Kate's recipe will be a favorite for sure. Maybe I'll even get my son in on the next cooking adventure in my kitchen. Usually it's only Grace & I but it might be fun.
