Summer is in full swing and kids are busy with lots of fun activities. Whether it’s a trip to the splash park, the beach, or playing in the backyard, the one thing parents are bound to hear is “I’m hungry”.
Here are some super snack ideas for kids that are nutritious and easy to have on hand.
Fresh Fruit (blueberries, grapes, strawberries, apples etc)
Fresh Veggies (carrots, cucumbers, celery sticks)
Nuts and Seeds (mixed nuts and seeds – add some raisins to make your own trail mix)
Healthy Snack Bars (you can make homemade bars such as these nut free ones, these chocolate energy bites or opt for a healthy packaged option such as the Qi’a Superfood Snack Bars – made by Nature’s Path).
I like to prewash fruit and wash and cut up my veggies to make them quick and easy to grab in a hurry.
Desiree Nielsen, a registered dietitian in Vancouver, Canada and the author of the book, Un-Junk Your Diet. A passionate supporter of organic, non-GMO foods shares which superfoods to look out for at the grocery store. “We don’t give seeds enough credit! Adding chia or hemp seeds to your diet is so easy and boosts your omega 3 and mineral intake. I love how versatile and energizing coconut is, particularly for those on a gluten free diet looking for non-grain options. Dark chocolate is probably the only dessert that gets superfood status – always look for at least 70% cocoa solids, preferably organic. And greens always top my list for a daily superfood boost. Choose whichever you love, from broccoli to Brussels sprouts to kale.”
