SUMMER STAYCATION IDEAS FOR FAMILIES

Over the last few years, the idea of “staycations” has gained in popularity. Whether you want to avoid the stresses of traveling or just can’t afford an elaborate vacation, taking the chance to take a break at home is a great way to spend some of your time this summer.

When you plan a successful staycation, the sky is the limit.

HOW TO PLAN A STAYCATION

  1. Set a start and end date for your summer staycation.
  2. Take the time to plan activities in advance.
  3. Disconnect as you would if you were away at a fancy resort. That means no e-mail, regular mail or phone calls.
  4. Set a budget for your summer staycation.
  5. Take lots of pictures and document your staycation as you would any vacation away from home.

GO CAMPING IN YOUR BACKYARD

No matter if you have a small or large backyard, take advantage of your outdoor space and have a home camp out.

One of the most exciting things about going on vacation is staying in a different environment, so why not create that in your own backyard?

Put up your tent, create a fire pit, make s’mores and tell scary stories.

VISIT YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY

Many local libraries offer different activities over the summer months, most of them free.

Spend a day attending reading programs, craft days, or even just choosing books with your family. The library is an amazing place to get away and enjoy an adventure, even if that adventure is in a story.

BE A TOURIST AT HOME

Do some research about your own town and find activities, places, and monuments that you have never participated in or visited.

Take a hike on a trail you have never been on, visit a new park or take in some of your town’s history. The possibilities are endless, and you get to experience something new and exciting right in your own town.

THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX

Do something you wouldn’t usually do at home. No matter if that’s staying up late, making popcorn in a pot on the stove or having breakfast for dinner.

Try something new. Getting out of your comfort zone and taking a walk on the proverbial wild side is a great way to make your staycation feel more like an adventure.

There are many ways to enjoy a summer staycation with your family this year! Just make sure that you plan it as you would any other vacation, set up some fun activities and think outside the box.

A little creativity will make your staycation something to remember.
