Many people are relying on debit cards to pay for their transactions, however, this can lead to out of control spending. Take out cash at the start of the week and decide on a concrete amount you will be spending that week. This will not only keep you from spending too much but it will also help you to make better decisions in terms of what you are spending your money on in the first place.

When paying in cash, instead of throwing that change back in your wallet put it in a change jar. Purposefully put all your change into this jar instead of using it to purchase things. If you do this every time you spend money it won’t take much time to have built up a nice little coin stash.

There are many different reward programs out there that allow you to earn points that can be redeemed for a certain cash value once you have collected enough. There are travel rewards, gas rewards and even programs that can be redeemed for groceries. Start collecting them and when you use the points or rewards, take the equivalent of the cash you saved and put it in your savings account. If you do this every time you redeem your points, you will find that you have saved a good chunk by the end of the year!

Good tips. I consider myself lucky as I was brought up with 'if you don't have the cash you can't buy it' attitude of my parents, who had lived through the hard times of WWII. I do use a credit card, albeit one with cash back and pay it off totally at the end of each month. Not doing so is a big mistake that many people make and they end up paying a small fortune in interest alone.
