Need your Tips for Flights with kids!

Ok readers, I need your help! I look forward to your tips, because you always have amazing suggestions!

Our family will be going to Florida in July. As you know, we are from Canada and since being married we have not flown outside of Canada – we have never flown with our kids.

Our daughter “Belle” is almost 2 and “Snow White” is 4 and a half.

I would love your tips for keeping our girls entertained on the flight – we have one layover. Our flights leave early! We are to arrive in Florida just before supper.

We are fortunate enough to be staying with great friends who live there, so we trust them for our adventures when we are there, I just really need ideas of what to have to keep the kids entertained! What do we pack?

…and YIKES it will sure be HOT!

So, Please leave a comment! I appreciate you help!!! (by the way, this mommy is afraid of flying!)

and be sure to enter our current $50 giveaway while you are here!

I have done several (14hr) long haul flights, alone with my son, first time he was 11mths.

the most important (in my opinion) is be super organised. In your carry on put everything in separate bags, ziplocks are best because you can see what is inside.

A change of clothes for the kids PLUS a change for you, you don't want to land and have to continue your journey smelling like sick because one of kids threw up on you and you didn't pack a spare T.

Give the child their own bags with their toys in it, tell them that it is airplane regulations that only one toy is allowed out at once (you could ask the steward to help with this little white lie :o) ) Pack a couple of popular toys and a couple of new ones don't take there 'bestist' toy just in case it gets lost. Fuzzy felt and wipable puzzles went down well.

snacks - avoid lots of sugar stuff, I did take a couple of chuba chuba lollies last time which were perfect for take off and landing. I made a roll-a-snack game last time and it went down a treat, made a small handful of snacks last for ages, it is described in this link along with what else was in his bag (aged nearly 4). the black light pen was a big hit and I have taken those glo sticks before toohttp://jojoebi.blogspot.com/2009/05/whats-in-bag.html

this is what we took when he was twohttp://jojoebi.blogspot.com/2007/08/im-bored.html

Everyone thinks I am insane when I say this but if you use a stroller put it in the hold DON'T take on board with you. (we have never even owned a stroller). From the moment the kids get out of the car at the airport make them walk, before you get on the plane have them run races up and down the corridor, wear them out! Then when they are on board they are too tired to want to run round screaming. When you get off to change flights, repeat! If you are worried about losing them, get one of those wrist band things or safety reins. The first couple of times I did take the papoose on with me just in case.

Finally, if you are still reading... the best bit of advice I was given as a new mom travelling alone, was relax and enjoy it. If you are stressed the kids will pick up on it and it will all turn horrible. Relax, laugh at anything that goes wrong and treat yourself to a G&T (or preferred tipple) when you get on board.

Have a great and safe trip xxx

First of all, I am a Disneyland buff. Please let me direct you to my post from this past March : http://runningscared.ca/UrbanMomtographer/?p=430 Entitled, "Doing Disneyland".My husband put a bunch of shows on the iPod Touch for our three year old and it worked great. Stay well hydrated, stay well fed. Bring earplugs if you feel like your neighbours might hate you. If nothing else, it will serve as a bit of comic relief when you hand them out?I can't imagine doing anything with more than one kid, but I think so long as you come prepared with books, snacks, toys and perhaps some electronic entertainment... You'll be fine.

You have some good ideas here. I also have had success with my 2 year old with sign language. In every day life, we only have ever learned/used a couple, but I have a book of signs that has kept us entertained while in the car for a long time. We talk about things and learn new signs for them. She loves it! It's good to have some ideas for quiet interaction between you as well as individual activities.
