My Daughter Thinks I’m Rapunzel

By Carly,

My daughters have always had some type of a security item when they were babies.  Something to help them through times of need. For my two older daughters This special item was a blanket crocheted with love by there grandma in a cute heart pattern. They each have there own and were quite attached to them. I remember countless episodes with my now 7 year old where her blanket (Eh ee oh ) to her was lost or left at a store. We would have to immediately go back till we found it. Even a trip in the washing machine was too long to bear to be with out this priceless item.

My one year old has been quite different. No Binky, thumb, Or blanket would soothe her. but a quick tug to my hair always did the trick. When this was first going on when she was quite small. it was adorable. I was honored that she had chosen me to be her comfort item and the light grasp she would have on my hair didn’t even faze me. it soothed her to sleep and calmed down her tears that was all that mattered to me.

Fast forward to now. She is 15 months old and pulling my hair with the same strength that a monster truck pulls a trailer. She now wraps my long hair around her little hand many times and proceeds to yank it so hard I almost have to do a double take to see if I have any left. I know she is not trying to hurt me, It is something she has done her whole life. She is just getting so strong that I really have contemplated shaving my head so it stops! (OK so not really, this could be an exaggeration but still!)

I know this will  eventually be a memory and it just illustrates  how different all three of my girls are. They are complete individuals  and I would not have it any other way (but hopefully the hair pulling stops soon!)

Both my kids have/had a fascination with my hair. My daughter used to grab at it everytime I nursed her and had to hold it and move her fingers around and through it. My son just grabs. I have to be careful when giving him to someone else as he may still have a fistful of my hair (he is 3 months)

This is really cute, although it does sound painful. Neither of my kids has had ANY comfort items, until my daughter recently adopted a pink cow called "Moo-Moo" to sleep with at age 4. I almost wish that they both would have been attached to something when they were younger - even a binky. I always fantasized that it would have made them much better sleepers as babies (my son is 2 and is still a terrible sleeper). Maybe we could borrow your hair...

My 3.5 year old still does this when he's really tired or upset. Sometimes I wonder if he'll do this to his wife when going to sleep at night.
