I remember well the day eight years ago, when I found out I was going to be a Mom. I knew right then and there that nothing would be the same again. Every thought of mine would now be occupied with what was the best for my baby. I knew that uninterrupted sleep moments would be few and far between. And I knew that I would have to give some stuff up. And I did, because I loved my baby!
But even us moms who are focused so much on our children need a break. We need to get out of the house and share some adult conversation. We need to go out and eat hot food and not have to worry about when baby’s next feeding will be or take 5 minutes (while our own food is sitting there nice and hot) to cut up and blow our child’s food.
But how many moms actually take that much-needed and deserved break? It took me a long time to realize that when I do something for ME, my children, husband and household all benefit. That “thing” you do for YOU doesn’t have to be an all-day shopping trip to the city without kids (although that would be heavenly), it doesn’t even have to be a 2-hour lunch with your girlfriend. All it has to be is 5-20 minutes a day where you are focused on yourself.
Something I do on a daily basis is put the kids into their rooms for “quiet time.” During this time they are in their rooms playing, reading or napping, there are so many things I could do, but I force myself to take at least 5-20 minutes for me! I brew myself an iced coffee (my favourite drink in the world!) and sit down to take some deep breaths, read a magazine or watch some TV that doesn’t include cartoons or stuffed animals. After those 5-20 minutes are over, I am feeling refreshed, rejuvenated and like the supermom I know I can be!
If you are a full-time working outside the home Mama, or if you can’t sit down during the kids’ “quiet time” try something simple first thing in the morning. I am not much of a makeup girl, but putting on some mascara in the mornings makes me feel prettier, special and it even gives me the illusion that I’m slimmer – and it takes LESS than 5 minutes!
So what do YOU do to make yourself feel pampered? Like I mentioned, it doesn’t have to be a big all-day excursion. It is the small and simple things that we do everyday that make us feel like the special women we are. After all, we have some pretty fantastic mini-mes watching our every move. Why not show our daughters that it doesn’t take a lot to make you feel special and pampered?
