From SAHM to Working Mom…Again

by Kate Hayes,

As it turns out, I have been holding out on all of you for a while. I have good news to share.
I got a new job! I will soon be the new marketing copywriter for a global IT company. In a fun twist, I will be getting paid almost as much as I was paid in my last job, with about one-tenth of the responsibilities. I think I can live with that.

It has been several weeks since I found out I was hired. I start next Monday. I am happy and excited and slightly nervous…and I don’t think that the realization of what this means for my family’s current happy-go-lucky lifestyle has fully sunk in yet. I now have to be somewhere every single weekday morning. Dressed. With make-up. And fully functional brain, ready to go.

But this is exactly what I wanted. It is what I prayed for. I missed having a career. Soon I will have a new one. And even if there is a brief adjustment period while our family figures out our new routine, I know that it will be good for all of us in the long run.

Thankfully, all the details about extra childcare for the kids fell perfectly into place. That tends to be how God works things out, is it not?

Several weeks before I got the job, two-year-old Kellen started begging to go to school like his big sister every morning when we dropped her off. So when I started taking him to look at daycares, he was thrilled. He thought I was doing him a huge favor. In fact, Kellen was so happy being at “his schools,” even briefly, that he would throw fits when we had to leave. This is clearly better than the alternative; you would much rather that your child be upset that you are taking him home from daycare than that you are leaving him there.

Kellen is extremely social and loves to make new friends. He is smart and eager to learn. I think that he is going to thrive in the preschool setting, and I’m happy that this new job of mine will pay for him to attend every day. How many moms get to say that about their toddlers when they go back to work?

Anna, our kindergartner, is equally excited about getting to spend a little extra time in a before and after-school care program. Admittedly, since Kyle will be picking them up fairly early, it won’t be a lot of extra time. But she thinks that she is going to have SO much fun hanging out with some of her friends outside of  their classroom. And who are we to argue with her?

So…now you know…my days as a SAHM (stay-at-home mom) are numbered. A new chapter of my life in a (somewhat) new career is about to begin. And I can’t wait to watch the pages unfold!
