It’s important to keep kids reading during summer holidays!
As much as children love their lack of structure during summer holidays, some form of routine can prove to be worth while.
Here are 5 tips to keep kids reading during the summer months.
1. Schedule a set reading/quiet time – In our home we schedule a quiet reading time from 1-2pm, Monday – Friday. The girls find a quiet place to relax with some books. This normally only happens 3 times a week because we are often out and about during the summer, but the girls know that if we are home, this is a part of their schedule. (If 1 hour is too long for your child, you can adjust the time to make it work for you).
2. Keep their book selection interesting – We regularly purchase books from the scholastic books orders and we make sure to get a few extra before school is out to keep us going during the summer. Scholastic has some new summer picture books that teach core values and even if your child is a pre-reader, the beautiful illustrations keep them captivated. You may want to check out “The Three Little Pigs and the Somewhat Bad Wolf” by Mark Teague, “Night Light” by Nicholas Bleachman, “King Pig” by Nick Bland, and one of our girls all time favorites, “Zoe’s Room (No Sisters Allowed)” by Bethanie Deeney Murguia.
3. Hit the Library – Most local libraries run a summer reading program which helps kids want to keep reading during the summer. Even if there is no local program where you live, being able to borrow new books each week will help keep reading fun and interesting all summer long.
4. Read yourself – I’m sure we have all heard the saying kids learn by what they see us do, not by what we tell them to do. Let your children catch you reading.
5. Make reading fun – Have time each week (or day) where you read together as a family or have an older sibling read to a younger sibling.
Summer Reading is very beneficial and a lot of fun.
