TANTRUM TRIGGERS AND HOW TO AVOID THEM

It can be extremely frustrating when your little one throws an epic temper tantrum in the grocery store.

Especially when the tantrum started over something as simple as a box of sugared cereal.

The truth is, tantrums are not uncommon and it certainly doesn’t mean that your child is not usually well-behaved.

Many toddlers throw tantrums rather frequently and it’s important that parents realize that they really can’t control the emotions their children are feeling.

While parents are unable to control the way their children feel, they can at very least try to control the situations that usually trigger the tantrums, to begin with.

TIREDNESS

No child is at their best when they are tired and honestly, toddlers don’t understand why they aren’t feeling right.

Oftentimes, when little ones are tired they just lose it, and there is no rational reason.

The best way to avoid this is to stick to bed and nap times precisely.  This means planning activity, errands, and play dates around them.

While there may be some occasions that you can’t avoid a nap interrupting excursion, just remember your child will become tired.

The best thing you can do in this case is to make sure you plan ahead.

Bring your little ones favorite blanket and stuffed animal along on the journey with you.  This can help to comfort them and even help them to catch a little shut eye before the tantrum hits.

HANGRY

Everyone has heard someone say they are “Hangry.”

The definition of hangry is: bad-tempered or irritable as a result of hunger.  This means they get into an emotional state when they are experiencing hunger.

Believe it or not, it’s not only adults that get “hangry”, kids do too.

Like being tired, being hungry can also reduce your little one’s ability to cope because it undercuts their need to feel safe.

To avoid your little one being triggered by hunger it is a good idea to have a bag with several different snacks packed for your outings.

LACK OF ATTENTION

Children crave attention from their parents and sometimes tend to throw tantrums when they don’t get it right away.

This is one instance that parents have to be very cautious about how they deal with the tantrum.

While the entire world can’t always revolve around your kids you have to acknowledge their pleas for attention in one way or another.

Let your little one know that while you understand their frustration, there are tasks you must complete before being able to fully pay attention.

To avoid this, offer them a distraction to help your child stay occupied for a short period of time. Just don’t forget to deliver on your promise to give them your full attention as soon as you can.

Temper tantrums are a common part of raising children and they will happen once in a while.

Finding ways to avoid the things that trigger your little one’s tantrums can help to decrease the intensity and frequency of their outbursts.

Always remember that temper tantrums don’t mean they are bad kids, just that they are experiencing some hard emotions.
