What’s Next?

by Carly,

After all the presents have been opened all the food eaten and then more food eaten. I find myself automatically thinking every year. Whats next? We put so much into the holiday season that it is so strange to me when it is finally over. We had a great Christmas lots of family time and fun, but it ends quite suddenly and leaves me perplexed about what is in store for the future. I like how everyone starts thinking about this and of course we hear loads and loads about new years resolutions.

I have never been good at making resolutions maybe it is because I set them too high. Things like I will not eat chocolate for a whole year only last about five minutes with me. I think it’s still good that every one is talking about ways to be better or accomplish things in the new year. Even if it has the effect of loosing steam a few weeks or months later.

During dinner recently I decided to talk with my family about some New Years resolutions we could make together and things we could improve on. I thought I would hear a lot of groans and “This is boring!” from my daughters but was surprised at just the opposite.  They hate to be lectured, but this topic was more optimistic and new and fun sounding I guess. They loved coming up with there own ideas.

We came up with a lot of generic answers but then thought of specifics that would work for us.

I want to cook healthier dinners and we decided I would make a vegetable side dish more often for dinner.

I loved my 5 years resolution when she chimed in with “No more fighting with sisters”. She said it with such energy and enthusiasm. I have to admit though, I don’t think that one is going to last the whole year.

We also decided we would read scriptures more together, do more active family activities and pick up better after ourselves. I think it was really nice talking about these things. While I know we won’t be always perfect on trying to be better. You have to admit it does have to start with a discussion.

What New Years Resolutions do you have for you or your family?

I love the idea of have a family meeting to make some family resolutions. I think I might have to try that over our meatballs and fondue on Fri:) Thanks for all your great ideas.

I was so sad the day after Christmas that it was all over. All the prep done and gone. All present opened - and the anticipation of watching everyone open their gifts gone too.

Good luck with the healthier eating. That's one of ours too. My daughter is lactose intolerant and some other food issues, my husband has gout, and I need to lose some weight. :)

Love your adding veggies / healthier eating and no fighting resolutions. We need both of these here at our home, too. Am trying to make more meals here in our home instead of going out to eat so much...am also trying to be sure that we end the day on a positive note each night...we actually started it for Advent, but plan to continue this year...each one of us says three nice things about each member of the family before we go to sleep. Has to be specific to something with that person, such as I liked it when we played with Legos today.Really has helped to make us reflect on our day and the good in each member of the family. So to continue doing this throughout the year is part of our resolution, as so far, it has been great for our family:)
