As parents, we want to provide everything that our children need the most.
The problem is, sometimes we focus too much on material things our kids need, and not enough on the other things we can offer them.
Sure, we provide our kids with hot meals, clean clothing and a roof over their heads, but that’s not enough.
THINGS YOUR TEENAGE SON NEEDS FROM YOU
While it is true that parents are busy with extracurriculars, work, and running a household, they also need to focus on relationship building, fostering their children’s well being and provide them with security.
There are some important things your teenage son needs from you, and none of them are material.
A SAFE SPACE
Some days your son will just need a space to figure things out.
Growing up is so hard and providing him with a safe space, free of judgment to figure it all out is important.
BOUNDARIES
Setting clear and consistent boundaries with solid consequences is important for your son.
While they may resist the rules you set in place, they will feel safer when they know there are clear-cut boundaries in place.
COMMUNICATION
Your son needs to be given the chance to communicate with you.
Make sure to offer one on one time with him and take an interest in his life.
While you may have to exercise patience while you wait for him to open up, he will eventually and once he feels comfortable, he will open up more often.
Just remember, don’t criticize during these communications, let him express himself.
FREEDOM
Boys need the chance to spread their wings.
Encourage your son to try new things and give him the opportunity to learn things for himself.
Remember though, with freedom comes great responsibility so if he pushes boundaries, there must be consequences.
GUIDANCE
Believe it or not, your son wants and needs for you to provide him with direction and guidance.
Just remember that when sharing your thoughts and advice, you must keep it productive and positive.
Don’t be judgemental, come from a place of caring rather than judgment.
UNCONDITIONAL LOVE
The love you have for your son should never come with conditions.
Make it clear that even if you are frustrated or unhappy with your son in a moment, that doesn’t mean you stop loving him.
Create an environment of unconditional love for your son to grow up in, and he will be sure to thrive.
There are certain things your son needs from you, beyond the daily basics.
Just make sure to provide a safe space with boundaries, open up the lines of communication, provide freedom and guidance and create an environment of unconditional love.
Your son will thank you when he reaches adulthood.
