The Help

The HelpThe Help is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a long time. My husband and I attended a screening of the movie together. I laughed, I cried, I bit my fingernails. I’d have to say that this is one of few movies my husband and I actually both enjoyed. Here is what he had to say: This week we had the opportunity to travel back in time with the move “The Help”.  In this movie we had a chance to observe what life was in Mississippi during the 1960s.
This movie focuses around the process of writing a book by an up an coming novelist named Skeeter (Emma Stone).  Skeeter attempts to get stories from “the help” and have them describe some of the pathetic standards that they must work and live through.
The challenge Skeeter had with writing this book was trying to find the people to give up the stories and not jeopardize their careers and in some cases, lives.  The stories, some concerning, humiliating, and some humorous gave a great picture of what life was like in a time that was not that long ago.  While the the author of the book was anonymous, the small town quickly picked up on some stories in the book and caused great distress in some of the prominent members of the community.
Over all I found this movie to be a great history lesson and would encourage students everywhere to watch this and learn about what life was like only 50 years ago.  If the objective of this wonderful movie was to caused great personal reflection of how I treat others…mission accomplished.

Based on one of the most talked about books in years and a #1 New York Times best-selling phenomenon, “The Help” is a provocative and inspiring look at what happens when a southern town’s unspoken code of rules and behavior is shattered by three courageous women who strike up an unlikely friendship.
