O’BON – a truly AMAZING company!

by Kristi,

This has got to be my favorite review so far because this company is so socially and environmentally responsible! O’BON is an amazing company that all started with a better pencil. Better because it protects the graphite better than the wood pencils and better because it is made from newspaper. Yes you read that right- newspaper! I’ll explain more of that later but first a little background on the company.

O’BON means “Oh Good” in French. This company was founded on the belief that basic products, such as pencils and notebooks, could be made in a more responsible way- thus creating a better planet. They started with the pencil, and like I said before, it is made by wrapping recycled newspaper around a graphite center. They claim that if you drop a wood pencil on the table the graphite inside will shatter and when you go to sharpen it pieces will crumble off, making it hard or even impossible to write with the pencil-but if you do the same to their pencil the newspaper better protects the graphite and because the graphite won’t shatter the pencil will last longer!

They are passionate about 3 things: combating deforestation, teaching environmental & social responsibility at a young age, and fighting to protect endangered species & other animals in need of help.

I received 3 products to review-

The O’BONanza Color Pencil Pack– 12 Fruit designs each representing a different color

These colored pencils produce beautiful even colors & my Little Man has been enjoying matching the fruit to the color!

O’BONanza A5 Journal-Orange-the cover has a texture like orange peels and is made from “Bagasse” Paper which is sugarcane paper.

This paper is smooth and is beautiful to write on. I love that it’s made out of something different but is still environmentally responsible.

I also received a 2 pencil ‘sampler’ pack of their Wildlife line of pencils– regular pencils made from tightly rolled recycled newspaper

I have to be honest-I usually write with pens because pencils tend to ‘skip’ around on me but these were wonderful and I actually have been using them to write all sorts of lists in my O’BON notebook!

Here is what the newspaper looks like when you look at the end of the paper. Each one is different and when you sharpen them you can see all the layers and even some of the newsprint!

These are high quality, environmentally responsible & friendly products. I have already written out my list of items to buy for Christmas presents for all the kids in my family & journals for my adult friends!

Before I finish up this review I would like to mention I noticed on their website that it says that “O’BON will match every purchase of O’BON products with a donation to the ‘Arbor Day Foundation’ to plant a tree” So not only is your purchase helping to recycle materials that might otherwise be thrown away, preventing more trees from being cut down but also they will donate to plant a new tree! That is a win-win-win for everyone!

Make sure you check out O’BON for your holiday shopping!

Cool!! I have 2 of those pencils! One of which is the actual newspaper print one. Unfortunately they didn't use an english newspaper to make that one so I can't read what's printed on it. I wish the lead was darker though, but otherwise it's great! And eco-friendly!
