Many blogs these days do contests & giveaways and it can be very handy to have numbered comments to keep track of the number entries and select a winner. I have found a a very simple way to number your comments- here’s how you do it:
Go to Layout>Edit HTML in your dashboard. Check the βExpand widget templatesβ box. Now hit ctrl+F this will bring up a search bar.
Now put this line of code in the search bar:
and add this code just BEFORE the line above
Now search for this line:
Add this code just BEFORE the line above
Click on Preview. If your blog runs without any errors then, your are done. Save the template.

Susie B. says
I don't have those lines in my HTML. Here's how mine looks, can this be done w/ a 3 column template?
#comments h4 {
margin:1em 0;
font-weight: bold;
line-height: 1.4em;
text-transform:uppercase;
letter-spacing:.2em;
color: $sidebarcolor;
}
#comments-block {
margin:1em 0 1.5em;
line-height:1.6em;
}
#comments-block .comment-author {
margin:.5em 0;
}
#comments-block .comment-body {
margin:.25em 0 0;
}
#comments-block .comment-footer {
margin:-.25em 0 2em;
line-height: 1.4em;
text-transform:uppercase;
letter-spacing:.1em;
}
#comments-block .comment-body p {
margin:0 0 .75em;
}
.deleted-comment {
font-style:italic;
color:gray;
}
Any help would be appreciated! π

Hi Lena. I did the instructions but no numbered comments are showing up. Will it only work on posts going forward and not apply to old ones?

Thank you so much for this tutorial!
I have a suggestion for another tutorial (or maybe you can direct me to an existing one) – now that I have numbered the comments, how can I customise the embedded comments view so each comment has a box/border around it (like on your blog?)

Courtney says
This is really helpful. I will have to try it later when I am more awake. I just started my own blog.
Courtney says
So I just did it and it worked. How does it work for giveaways if you comment on something somebody said ? I mean you shouldn't count your own posts right? Plus what if your comment gets picked as a winner ?
Emy says
OMG, thank you so much! I'd been searching for awhile how to number the comments on my blog, but I really couldn't follow the tutorials. Yours was so simple to follow. I was able to do it in my first try.
Would you mind if I shared this with my readers by simply linking them to your page. (Don't worry I won't copy your post}

For some reason when I click Expand Widget Templates it just doesn’t work! Do you have any idea what the problem is? I’m using a vector template of yours Lena. I really want to do a giveaway on my blog and would like the numbered comments.
Thanks! π
Meg
Lena says
I have no idea, it sounds like a blogger issue. Does it allow you to check it- and then it stays checked?
Kathy says
Sorry, it’s not working for me. I could follow the steps easily enough. To test, I added a couple of comments to today’s post. Then I came out, shut down, and came back in. The two comments were there…but were not numbered. I repeated the steps visually…by going back in the the html code and making sure every single character matched your written code lines. They do.
Does it take a while before it “takes” or something? Any ideas?
