School has been back in session for a couple of weeks here in Manitoba. My kids love school so there is never really an adjustment period to them going back. They love learning, seeing their friends and making new friends. But not every child is like that and it can be a struggle sometimes to get kids to enjoy going to school.
So how can you help them get through their school day?
Project Confidence ~ Children easily pick up on how you as their parent or guardian are feeling. If you show them that you are happy and excited for the school day, rather than concerned and fearful, they are more likely to feel positive about the school day ahead of them.
Help Them Connect ~ School is always easier when you have friends by your side! Where possible, help your child find a connection with a new friend. It can be someone that lives down your street, or sometimes ask the teacher if there is a student in your child’s class that would make a good companion for your child.
Be Yourself ~ Remind your little ones that even though they’ll feel pressure to fit in, they should be unique, be different and be themselves. Encourage them to pursue their interests and act as they would if they were at home.
Don’t forget to remind your little ones that no matter what happens in their new school, you have their backs every step of the way!
