When I heard about the new World Vision Spark program, I was so excited. You see, my 8 year old daughter has a compassionate heart. She is always thinking about new ways to help out the less fortunate in our own community and in the world around us. Last year she collected money, food and gifts for local charities and this past summer she collected food at our local parade for our community food bank.  She has also been saving money so that she can go to a poor country when she is older to volunteer in any way she can. As a mom, I’d love to take some credit for her compassionate heart, but the truth of the matter is that she has been teaching me to have a heart like hers. Since I already trusted World Vision as a great charity, I wanted to dig in and learn more about this new World Vision Spark program – and I can’t wait to share with you what I learned and what makes it different from other programs.

What is $20 dollars?  For some, it is an hour’s work, or if you are lucky, you may even make that in a couple of minutes.  $20 could be a week’s worth of coffee or a quick lunch at a fast food restaurant; however, for some people $20 could change their world.

With the new World Vision Spark program – you get to choose.

First, you get to choose the family. Browse through the profiles of families from various regions in the world and get to know what their specific needs are. You can read the family bio and learn what specific challenges they are faced with.

The second part of the program is to give a gift.  As I mentioned, you get to select how much you want to donate towards their need.  You could buy the whole gift yourself, or join with others to buy it together. You can see how much has already been donated towards their goal – it is tracked so you can actually see the progress the family is making.

The third part of the World Vision Spark program is that you actually get to see the difference.  Once the family has reached their goal, you not only get a photo of the family with their gift, you also get a quote telling you how that specific gift will benefit their family. What a great way to actually see that your donation has made a difference for a family.

I couldn’t help but feel a connection to one specific family.  Alla’s family sleeps on the floor, which sometimes makes them sick. They live with their mother, who doesn’t have a job. As a mom, I cannot imagine what it would be like to not have beds for my children to sleep in – their need is so real.

Just like Alla’s family struck a chord with me, World Vision Spark opens you to real families facing real struggles; real solutions; and evidence of real change. It creates a tangible way of giving that allows you to actually see the impact of change.

To help make even more of a difference in the lives of families who are less fortunate, from Tuesday September 24th to Sunday October 27th, YMC will match every dollar donated by YMC members through World Vision’s Spark website, up to $1,000.00 CDN.

World Vision Spark offers Canadian families the opportunity to help a specific family or community in the developing world. Through www.sparkchange.ca, you can meet these families, understand what they need, and spark a difference in their lives.

What a great idea to be able to "meet" the family that you will be helping. Definitely helps you connect more to the cause.
