Kids, BE QUIET a baby is sleeping!

Q: How can i get my 5 and 3 year old to play quietly while my baby is napping? She is a VERY light sleeper.


A: Ah yes the impossible question, without resorting to chloroform or duct tape. Well I am glad to hear that you have decided to not place your children in front of a television and wait out the time there. As for 3 and 5 year olds they have an attention span shorter than Lindsey Lohan’s jail sentence (sorry, I have been saving this one for several weeks and needed a place to use it), and it is trying to get them to focus on something of significance for a time can be a challenge. I think where most parents run into obstacles in this setting is giving the child lots to do. My advice is to put the brakes on giving them lots of “stuff” and only give them one thing to do. Children at this age are very distractible and often times will jump from one toy to another simply because it is there. If you don’t believe me, think about a time when a child is playing with one toy and another child picks up a different toy that is next to the first child. “THAT IS MY TOY…I WANT THAT TOY” and so on and so forth. When it comes to nap time have the child identify a couple of toys or activities they enjoy and give the child one toy or activity that they enjoy and leave it at that. Have a steady supply of toy’s/activities on hand because no matter who the child is, they will get bored and want something else. Rehearse with the child how they will let you know when the want a change in toy/activity, but remember that the more you get down and play with them, the more hypnotized they will be with the toy.
