Hit The Road This Summer! #FisherPriceMoms

It’s summer time and time for everything fun including trips to the lake, grandma’s house and various other vacation destinations.  However, summer travel in the car can always come with a price…especially when traveling with young children.  Good news though, we’ve found the secret…that has been working for our road trips with the girls!

Over the past couple years our family has made it a tradition to take an 8 hour road trip to one of our favorite vacation playgrounds.  Now as exciting as it sounds of having 2 girls trapped in a car with very little sleep that get bored really easily. Who knew 2 little girls could quickly lose patience with each other 1 hour into the trip because one of them started to copy the other and they cannot agree on what to watch or listen to?!? It’s really not that fun while driving. Take my word for it!  After the request to take a potty break at every exit I sometimes wonder why do we do this to ourselves every year.

You may wonder where I am going with this…

We actually found a trick that has helped up immensely along the way!!!

Hidden in the car within the children’s reach are presents that are wrapped with special notes from mommy and daddy.  The kids are encouraged to look in particular places to find these treasures (all while buckled in of course).  Their eyes light up and they have a new toy that will be the object of their fascination for the next few hours…or at least until the next stop along the way. Some gifts they open in the car, and others they get to open when we take potty/stretch breaks.

These treasures do not have to be expensive (coloring book with crayons, book, new DVD  etc.), but the excitement of opening up a new present just seems to add to the excitement of the trip and makes that time on the road a little more memorable (and quiet).

What are some of your tips for road trips and what makes it memorable for you and them?

What a great idea!!! We just got back from a 12 hour road trip and Little One was quite the trooper! Not bad for a 3.5 year old stuck in the car for 12 hrs! I love your idea and may have to borrow it! :) Thanks for sharing!
