Helping kids eat a balanced diet #TysonNuggets

I am sure that when children are born, they have a special ability to know what is good for them and what is not, it often seems more challenging to get kids to eat what is nourishing for their bodies than what is not so good for them. This is a challenge for parents, however speaking as the parent in our household…challenge accepted.

There are lots of ways that one can help ensure that your child can maintain a balanced diet in the home. The first thing to consider is where your food comes from. When shopping be very cautious about what goes home with you. I know that if I buy processed, high sodium, sugar filled, unhealthy foods, we eat them. So if they are not in the home, they can not be consumed. Simple.

Also when you are shopping at most grocery stores, you will see a reoccurring pattern in all stores (when I explain this you will know what I mean when you go to the store.) The majority of your shopping can be done by simply walking around the perimeter of the store. In most stores, this is where your fruits and veggies, dairy cooler, frozen foods, meat counter and bakery are. By sticking to these area and bringing home these items, you have avoided many of these products you should not be consuming.

The next step is to prepare what you have bought. There are many great websites out there that will aid in the cooking of great sides dishes to help your main dishes like (the Tyson chicken strips I am writing about). Dressing up a zucchini with various spices and other starches to complement it will help greatly in making it more palatable for your kids.

Using cookie cutters to make veggies look fun is also a great way to get kids to try a variety of foods.

The final tip I will give you is to have premade snacks made and ready to go. When my daughter gets off the bus she will inhale whatever I put in front of her. By preparing for this and giving her a plate of healthy alternatives she is ready to take on the rest of her day.

If we start early and only give our children healthy alternatives they will only ask for them. I am not saying that we cannot have treats in the home, as long as they are treated like treats and not a regular dinner item.
