Cheetah Cake

Cheetah prints are so fun! I’ve been wanting to make one for awhile now but there are so many ideas to choose from. One would think that it would be easier to decorate a cake when the sky is the limit, but that’s just the thing — the sky is very big! It doesn’t help that I change my mind a million times before I actually complete a project.  When my kids have outrageous ideas as to what they would like on their own cakes, I at least have a clear direction. Not that clear direction always helps either.

When I made this cake I debated over several things: colors, type of flower and do I make it a two tier or just one tier cake. I kind of just made decisions as I went along and that sometimes works for me.

A Cheetah Cake is actually a pretty easy cake to make. After the cake is covered in fondant color of your choice, paint on the design randomly.

First you have to make the paint by using a small amount of gel food coloring plus a little bit of vodka to make a painting consistency (the alcohol is so that it evaporates quickly). I used yellow and a small amount of brown for the centers with vanilla extract (I don’t have vodka in the house and my vanilla extract is made with bourbon). You probably could use a small amount of water but it will take much longer to dry. At this point you randomly paint spots all over with a paint brush. Don’t worry about perfection since you want it to look natural.

When the centers are complete, go back around the cake with “black paint” and paint around them. Again, don’t be too picky. Don’t forget to paint plain black dots to fill in the empty spots.

The last step is to add the extras. I used black ribbon for the border and an orange flower made out of fondant.
