Baby Steps to Minimalism: a Mom’s Guide

I have been trying to get rid of a lot of stuff. One way I do this is by getting rid of something whenever I get something else. I do not like clutter in my house, so I decided to try a cleaner blog look too. What do you think?

Now I would love for you to meet Rachel. Rachel lives with very little and she is very happy.

Last spring I kept hearing about the 100 things movement and minimalism. People were shedding their possessions and delighting in living with less. It sounded interesting but nothing I was capable of or would want to try. I have a one year-old and a husband and we like a lot of our stuff. We use our television, we watch our DVDs and I like sitting at a dining room table for dinner – not on the floor.

My big issue was staying on top of clutter. After months at home on maternity leave I was still no farther ahead in finding an organization solution for all of our stuff. We had drawers filled with bits and pieces of things and when all the laundry was done – which was rare – not all of our clothing fit in our closet and dressers. Our bathroom cupboards were so full that our big Costco size pack of toilet paper was parked in our dining room next to the china cabinet. Needless to say, I didn’t want to have people over for a dinner party. I started to think more about these people living with 100 things. I couldn’t do that but could I find a way to make my life a little easier by having less stuff?

That was my start to becoming the Minimalist Mom. I spent two months slowly picking through our belongings. I got rid the sheets and duvet for the guest bed we no longer had and the random kitchen items I used once a year. We sold most of our books and started going to the library more. After having a baby and deciding not to go back to my corporate job I was able to say goodbye to 80% of my wardrobe. Most of what I had either didn’t fit me well or I never wore it. It was nice to send it to a charity where it would be appreciated. We kept what we use in 95% of our daily life which happened to be about half of our things.

We haven’t completely stopped shopping. In fact, I devote a small amount of time each week to it. I keep a list of what my growing son is in need of and what items I am looking for. I do a lot of my shopping online and find it quick and easy to compare prices and find deals. I also spend time reading product reviews like the ones here on Mommy Moment. I want to buy things we need and that other moms can tell me are good value.

We also now loan out and borrow from friends more. I kept some entertaining platters and baking tools that I love but don’t use often. It feels great to let a friend borrow them and should I need to borrow a cocktail dress I have lots of friends willing to loan me one.

It’s easier to clean my home now and I spend a lot less time moving piles of our things to keep rooms tidy. I wear everything in my wardrobe and it all looks good on me and fits me. With less stuff I am finding more time to connect with my son and my husband. Instead of cleaning when my son is napping I now have time to relax, read a book or catch up on some of my favorite blogs. My days aren’t so rushed and frantic anymore.

Life really is better when you keep just the best.

I’d love to here your thoughts on minimalism. Please leave a comment.

I didn't know there was a 100 item movement, but I am someone who is downsizing to 100 items over the next 3 years. I started blogging about it, but now my blog has many directions :-) Having more time for family is a great reason for downsizing! Glad you get to enjoy that time!

It's amazing how clean my house looks, there's just less :) When we moved to this house, we donated a ton. And for birthdays and Christmas, we ask everyone to tone it down. It's just too much!

Nice Guest post, Rachel!Great idea to discuss minimalism. We are working at reducing and re-purposing things. De-cluttering is always a great way to start off the new year! Your new look is nice and clean...very easy to read and very inspiring, too. I have made some changes on my blog to reduce the clutter and make it hopefully easier on the eye.Wanted to let you know that there is a new rule in the US about full disclosure, so that is why I had to write a blog post about it and finally figured out how to add it to the link bar at the top of my blog. Goes into effect for 2011 here. Just FYI. Hope you'll pop by to see the changes I tried to make on my blog. Wasn't easy, but I am slowly learning and may even dive into Twitter / Hoot Suite soon.Talk to you soon, Jody.

First of all, the blog is beautiful! I feel like I'm constantly working on the clutter around here, but I just made some huge donations and that helped a lot. The kids always seem to feel less stressed when the house is in better order. I know I do!
