3 STEPS TO ADJUST YOUR SLEEP ROUTINE

Tips from: John Rukel, Sleep Expert, Founder of PILLOW of HEALTH®

The kids are back in school, but that doesn’t mean that they’ve automatically switched over to the school year mindset.

For kids, it doesn’t come as naturally as the idea of new school supplies, seeing their friends again, and showing off their fresh new clothes and hairstyles.

This means that it’s up to parents to handle adjusting the whole family’s schedule into a new routine.

While that seems impossible at first, all you have to do is remember one word: Sleep!

A good night’s rest is the key to falling back into a regular schedule, and following a few steps will help get you and your family get back into a schedule in no time.

3 STEPS TO ADJUST YOUR BACK TO SCHOOL SLEEP ROUTINE

RELEASE YOUR KIDS’ PENT UP ENERGY

The kids come home from a long day at school with too much energy from sitting at their desks. To get the energy out, plan after-school activities like family bike rides, play dates or just have them play in the backyard. This will (hopefully!) exhaust the kids, allowing them to fall asleep earlier and faster.

I find that my kids enjoy getting out and biking after school more when they have themed helmets and elbow pads decorated with their favorite TV characters.

FOLLOW A RELAXING BEDTIME ROUTINE

After the activities wear out the kids, it’s time to relax and prepare their minds and bodies for rest. Relaxing routines differ for everyone, so testing out things such as warm baths, drinking warm milk, reading a book or even a little meditating will allow you to find what works best for your family.

This bedtime routine will help everyone fall asleep faster while also giving your family a schedule to follow.

CHANGE UP YOUR SLEEP ENVIRONMENT

Things you can adjust include lighting, temperature, and coziness. The comfort of your bed is crucial to a good night’s sleep because it not only determines how easily you fall asleep, but how well you stay asleep throughout the night.

I have found that comfort for me stems mostly from the pillows my family and I use. PILLOW of HEALTH® offers a Kids Pillow that is comfortable and healthy. One side is made of fleece for those cold winter nights, while the other side is made of a moisture-wicking fabric to keep kids cool and dry.

The Kids Pillow is also offered in a variety of colors and is hypoallergenic, antimicrobial and dust mite resistant to keep allergens away and kids happy and healthy throughout the school year.

As parents, we all know and can sympathize with hectic days. There are times when the kids’ activities get switched or our meetings at work go long.

There is no such thing as a set schedule you can use every day, but with a few adjustments, you can help your family stick to a routine without much work and get the sleep you and your kids need to get back on schedule for the school year.
