LESS TOYS, HAPPIER KIDS?

Less toys, happier kids?

The world wants kids to know that toys will make them happy.

However, as a mom, I can’t say that is how I want to raise my kids. Just think of how much happier you are when you don’t have clutter and a mess to deal with. Kids feel the same way!

When they are overwhelmed with toys and clutter, it can truly affect their mood and how they feel on a daily basis.

Less toys, happier kids? Today on mommymoment.ca we discuss this. Does less toys equal happier kids?

My kids are much happier with having less toys and here’s why:

LESS CLEANUP

My kids feel less stressed when they don’t have to clean up so many toys.  They are much happier because their toys don’t take long at all to clean up. It is also freeing for me because I don’t want to spend all day cleaning.

LESS TO SORT THROUGH

When my kids are playing, having less toys makes it easier to sort through. They can find what they like and then play with what they actually want to! It’s nice to simply walk into their room and find them playing with a few toys rather than having a ton that they can’t even sort through.

KIDS ARE MORE CREATIVE

Something I’ve noticed since my kids have fewer toys to play with is that they are more creative. They have more of a chance to use their imagination.

Toys tend to do most of the work for kids, so it’s nice when I see my kids making something or being creative with what they have found.

THEY TAKE BETTER CARE OF THEIR TOYS

When kids don’t have a lot of toys to sift through, they are more likely to take care of what they have. Our family also spends money on toys that will last longer rather on toys that will break in just a few minutes.

Can less toys equal happier kids for you?

I absolutely agree. My kids don’t have many toys. I’m constantly sorting through them to see what they can do without. Blocks are big for my 4 year old. She can spend hours entertaining herself with them. And when my older daughter gets home from school, or on the weekend, they play pretend a lot together. It’s been nice watching them favor that form of entertainment versus electronics.

I know less toys = a happier mommy! I can't stand the mess! About 6 months ago, I started a new system. I put ALL the toys into bins - a variety of different things in each bin. Each month, we put all the toys into a bin and get out a new one. This way, they only have so many toys out at once. It's saving my sanity and I find they engage in more imaginative play.

I recently put away about half of the toys in our basement. Not only is the basement cleaner now, the kids play down there longer and don't fight as much because they have space to play.

Kristy, isn't that wonderful! I know my girls have been so much happier too. Thanks for leaving a comment. Have a great day.

I agree as well iur daughter is 18 months old and she plays with cupboard boxes and her old baby boytles and has the best fun with these as we play with her too. Too many toys are a distraction from being creative.

I find this to be absolutely true! I have been finding ways to declutter our home and lives for the last few months and the kids' toys was one of those things to go! I have 2 little ones ages 5 & 6. At the beginning of this year they had 5 toyboxes, 3 2 drawer carts and a closet full of crap, and that's just what most of it was, CRAP! And it was all over my house! I had the boys help go through their toys and we now have it down to 2 toyboxes, one 3 drawer cart and a tidy closet! They are more apt to clean up without being asked and don't hound me when they can't find something. They also have their days now where they don't really play with any toys at all, they'll just sit and do workbooks and color all day or want to go outdoors for the day. It truly has been a blessing. No longer are there toys all over my house and my boys just genuinely seem happier! Thank you for the post!
