October is Fire Prevention Month {#Giveaway}

For many of us, the most important things in our lives are not things…they are our family.  And while we do everything to protect them, we have to be proactive in this action.  One way we have decided to do this is to be alert if there is ever something wrong in our home.

First Alert is Canada’s most trusted and recognized fire safety company and has products to detect smoke, heat and carbon monoxide.

First up is something called the Atom.  This is unlike any other smoke alarm I have ever seen.  To start with it is about the size of 2 tea light candles and louder than my husbands snoring (very very very loud).  Not only is it stylish but set up is just as easy.  Thanks to the removable base and with a quick twist, the Atom can be installed on ceilings or high on the wall.  This  tiny but mighty alarm has photoelectric sensors (more on this later).  This is unlike any smoke alarm I have seen.  It is small yet stylish can can be placed virtually anywhere.  Set to be released this month, you can get this new stylish micro alarm at Canadian Tire, Walmart and Lowes.  For a product so small, it can have a great impact on your family.

If you are in the marked for a alarm that is stylish detects carbon monoxide and talks, then the new First Alert Designer Series Combination Alarm is another need to have to protect your family.  Equipped with photoelectric sensors (will explain soon…i promise), this programmable alarm will guide you a more appropriate location.  When you first get the alarm you have to program where you are putting it.  Once you have the location established the alarm will tell you where the issues make be.  In a loud voice you may hear “Warning, evacuate smoke in (placed location), Evacuate”.  A great feature that will let you know where to avoid and run for safety.  The alarm is also a slim design that can be placed anywhere.

Now for the moment you have been desiring to know.  What are photoelectric sensors?

There are generally two types of smoke detectors – ionization smoke detectors and photoelectric type smoke detectors. Smoke particles of a varying number and size are produced in all fires.

Ionization Sensor Technology – Smoke Alarms using ionization sensor technology are generally more sensitive than photoelectric technology smoke detectors at sensing small particles, which tend to be produced in greater amounts by hot, flaming fires, that are consuming combustible materials rapidly and may spread quickly. Sources of these fires may include paper burning in a wastebasket, or a grease fire in the kitchen.

Photoelectric Sensor Technology – Smoke Alarms using photoelectric sensor technology are generally more sensitive than ionization technology at sensing large smoke particles, which tend to be produced in greater amounts by smoldering fires, which may smolder for hours before bursting into flame. Sources of these fires may include cigarettes burning in couches or bedding. For more information, please visit www.firstalert.ca

This is just a reminder that October is Fire Prevention Month.  Lives can be saved by simply installing smoke alarm.  Please check out First Alert’s Facebook page  to see how you can will one of their daily Atom smoke alarms.  This is a daily draw so enter often.

Let’s protect the important things in life…that are, in fact, not things.  Let’s protect our families!

We do have a couple of different fire safety plans (an extra one for if a fire breaks out while my husband is at work), but we're still perfecting it, since we only bought this house a few months ago.
