The community of about 5,000 people in the state of Wisconsin welcomes an astonishing five million visitors a year. Why do they come? In a word, waterparks. Wisconsin Dells bills itself as the Waterpark Capital of the World, and with good reason. But if you’re ready to write off Wisconsin Dells because you’re not really a water person, hold on just a minute. Water parks may have put The Dells on the vacation map, but it’s everything else that keeps visitors coming back year after year.

1. Fitzgerald’s Motel

Wisconsin Dells has a charming downtown area packed with shops, restaurants and motels along Broadway Avenue. It’s here that you’ll find Fitzgerald’s Motel. It’s the kind of place where you park outside the front door of your room, have a seat on the outdoor bench among the hanging baskets of geraniums and chat with your neighbouring vacationers. Warm and friendly just barely begins to describe hotel owner Margaret and her staff. Guests pop into the office to grab a cup of coffee and a snack before starting their days. The retro charm of the rooms includes vases of artificial flowers and pink fixtures in the bathroom. Rates start at $55. Out back, there’s a small but serene pool area where you can kick back after a busy day on the town.

2. Sherwood Forest Camping and RV Park

Is it really roughing it if there are two swimming pools at your campground? Sherwood Forest lets you set up camp among the oaks and pines to get your outdoor fix, but it also offers a touch of luxury by way of the heated pools, gift shop and free showers. Rates start at $30 a night making it the most economical choice compared with motels and resorts. If you haven’t traveled with your camper, the good folks at Sherwood Forest will rent you a tent trailer or a small cottage. And if you can’t wait to brag via e-mail about your vacation to the folks back home, this campground features free WiFi.

3. Chula Vista Resort

Granite counter tops, a balcony, a pair of televisions and gas fireplaces—it’s a real treat to stay in a place that’s nicer than your home. If you opt for Fairway Studio Villa, you’ll get a roomy space with a kitchenette (including a table and chairs). Stock up with breakfast essentials and you can enjoy the first meal of the day overlooking the golf course. Starting at $150 a night, there’s value here because it includes free admission to all of the indoor and outdoor water parks in the complex (an all-day pass at any water park will cost you about $38). Stroll over to a Starbucks, restaurants, arcade, spa and shops in the main complex. For a one-stop vacation spot, this is it.
