There are several holiday safety tips that should be considered when planning for upcoming festivities, decorations and cozy nights by the fire.

  • Never use lit candles near curtains, trees or any other potentially flammable item.
  • Do not plug more than three sets of lights into one single extension cord.
  • Replace lights or strings of lights with loose bulb connections or broken cords.
  • Never use nails to hang lights, instead use clips to avoid damaging the cords.
  • Make sure to have a professional come to inspect your chimney and furnace prior to heating your home.
  • Always unplug your Christmas tree during the night while everyone is sleeping.
  • Never place wrapping paper in your fireplace to burn it.
  • Test and replace all smoke detectors in your home and inform your family and guests of any fire escape plan you may have in place.
  • Keep stockings away from a heat source. This includes a lit fireplace.

  • Always make sure that you always use a ladder with slip-resistant feet and keep three points of contact on the ladder.
  • Mount your Christmas tree on a steady base to ensure it isn’t easily pulled over and it won’t fall on young children, pets or other guests at your home.
  • Read all labels on new toys and make sure they are safe for your children.
