DON’T LET COMPARISON STEAL YOUR JOY

Don’t let comparison steal your joy. Comparison is an ugly game. Don’t get caught up in it.

The funny thing about being a mom is that so often the conversations we have with our children are often ones we should be having with ourselves as well. I was talking to my girls the other day about not comparing themselves to others. We had a great discussion and I did not think much about it afterward, I just went to bed.

The next morning I sat down to do some blog work, but I was really struggling with it. The words did not want to come to me. I began thinking about other bloggers and all the great parenting experts out there and how they seem to be able to do everything so well – before I knew it I realized I was comparing myself to others and I was letting myself get discouraged.

WHOA.

I had just had such a great talk with my girls about this exact same thing the night before and here I was not living out what I was teaching them. SOUND THE ALARM!!!

I stopped right there.

I was not going to let comparison steal my joy

  1. I wrote down 3 things that I am really good at.
  2. I told myself that my best is enough.
  3. I smiled and reminded myself that I was happy for these other successful people. I can be inspired by them.

Comparison is an ugly game.

Let’s think about this for a moment. If someone posts about:

  • their gorgeous new house
  • their amazing trip
  • their promotion at work
  • their seemingly perfect marriage
  • ___________________ etc…

Remember that just because you saw or heard that, it does not change your life – it does not steal anything from you. You still have the same life you did before hearing about their success whether that is good or bad.

Don't let comparison steal your joy

What are your strengths?

What are things that make you happy?

Focus on your own life, be inspired by others you admire but whatever you do, do not let comparison steal your joy.

YOUR WORST WILL NEVER MEASURE UP TO THE BEST OF SOMEONE ELSE

and…

Let’s be real – even the people who seem to have the perfect life deal with real struggles that you and I may know nothing about.

You can see this talk on Periscope live for 24 hours. – If you are watching the replay, you can tap the screen to give hearts <3

Do you have a topic you want me to discuss on Mommy Moment Monday Mornings?

I am guilty of this and often times compare myself to others or wish I had what they had...this was an eye opener. I'm going to try making a list like you did to appreciate what I have.

Sarah, You are not alone in this, it is so easy to get caught in the cycle.

Couldn't have come across this blog post at a better time. I usually don't have a habit of comparing myself, but sometimes it happens. I write positive notes in my notepad to cheer me up:)

I love that idea about the notebook - i bet it is fun to go back and read in it on those hard days.

I love the line that someone else's joy takes nothing away from yours. It's something I try to remember but my problem is usually not comparing myself to someone else but rather comparing myself to some unattainable perfection i.e. I made X mistake, I should never have made X mistake, I fail. Sigh.

You do not fail. You need to tell yourself daily that you are enough. Write 3 things you love about yourself. Put sticky notes on your mirror as reminders. (hugs) You ARE enough!!!
