VOLUNTEER IDEAS FOR FAMILIES

Volunteering as a family has many benefits.

Not only does volunteering as a family build character, but it also fosters empathy, compassion, tolerance, and gratitude.

While there are many benefits, some families don’t know where to start when it comes to volunteering together.

The good news is that there are plenty of volunteer jobs out there for families with kids of all ages. You can even get your teenagers volunteering.

First, it’s important to consider what type of project you are interested in.

A long-term commitment or a short one-time volunteer experience will both have benefits, but it’s important to find which one will suit your family’s needs.

DONATE TO A FOOD PROGRAM

Every time you visit a grocery store with your family, have your kids pick out one item each to donate to a local food program.

Check with your local food bank to see what items are missing from their shelves and scout those out the next time you go shopping.

Toilet paper and baby formula are often overlooked.

DO A WALK

Many different organizations use special walks for fundraisers and to help raise awareness.

These are perfect for families to participate in together.

If your children are old enough they can walk along with you, if not bring a stroller.

DELIVER MEALS

Visit local people who require care at home and bring them some hot meals and a little company.

Bring along a simple card game to play.

The smiles on their faces will make all the difference.

HELP PREPARE A MEAL

Some cities have programs where you can pick up donated grocery supplies and freezer containers and make freezer meals from your home.

Then bring them back to put in the community freezer for programs that they run for the less fortunate.

SERVE AT A SOUP KITCHEN

Many communities have a soup kitchen that you can volunteer at as a family.

While many people think to volunteer on Thanksgiving or at Christmas, soup kitchens need servers and clean up crews every day of the week.

MAKE ACTIVITY BOXES

Take some time out to decorate empty shoe boxes with your family.

Then, fill them with items that you think children will enjoy playing with.

Things like puzzles, cards, and small toys are great additions to these boxes.

Once constructed, visit your local children’s hospital to pass them out.

FAMILY CLEAN UP

Visit your local park and bring a large garbage bag, gloves, and hand sanitizer.

Spend some time cleaning up garbage scattered around the park.

This is a great activity you can do regularly with your family to keep the neighborhood clean.

There are many ways to volunteer with your family.

No matter how old your kids are, volunteering has so many benefits.

Find ways that you can serve your local community, and get involved as a family.
