The end is nigh and soon the kids will be waking up early as the before school rush begins. As parents it is our job to ensure our children are well fed, faces are washed and that they did not put their clothes on backwards. This all has to be done in record time before the bus arrives, and it seems to be coming earlier every year…sigh.
In our home, our daughter is still young enough that school is a fun thing and we do not get very many complaints about going to school…yet. However it is still our job now to make it fun and enjoyable for her and we will do our part to make sure that she likes getting on that big yellow bus every day.
One way that we help her enjoy her day more is by making her look forward to opening her lunch box and seeing some type of lunch that makes her know that we care about her…and make her friends take notice too. In our North American culture food is what makes us come together so our daughters lunch is made to be a little out of this world.
We have become fans of Bento style lunches. While making these lovable lunches (as we call them) can be time consuming at times (ugh) it is a great way to brighten up our daughters day. I can only imagine her face at the midway point when she opens her lunch box and sees a nature scene or a cartoon character made out of her food just for her.
Now while this may not be one of the key enticements to get her out of bed in the morning, it does make it fun for her once she is there. The key to making this work for your little pupil is to obviously make your lunch the night before. I know for myself this is often the last thing I want to do in the evening, however it is a must. The other advantage to this is it makes your morning routine easier as there is one less thing to do.
The other thing that makes its way into every lunch box that leaves our home is a note to tell our little scholar that we love her.
You don’t have to make these fancy Lovable Lunches like we do (yes my husband helps sometimes) but you could send notes like lunchbox love or little jots along with your child for that special touch if you like.
To all the moms out there, enjoy your freedom and sleep in while you still can. Take you kids to the park or shopping for new clothes to get them ready for school, because if they are not back-to-school already, they will be soon!
How do you help your kids adjust to the back-to-school routine?

My DD is about to start kindergarten this year and we have been practicing with bento style lunches while she went to summer camp. It's probably more fun for me to use cookie cutters and making her lunch cute than her eating it. Hahah...
Quick question, where did you get the stainless steel box your daughter is using in the photo? Been looking for something like that with separate compartments in Canada but can't find. We use plastic style bento boxes but nothing compartmentalized like that

Awww! I love it! I make little one's lunches like that too. She loves them :) When I taught and lived overseas, the Japanese moms would always get up early and make the bento lunches for their families. They often did lunches like this for the little ones. Amazing.

So cute! I wish my boys ate all those things you packed. It might make lunch making less of a pain! :-)

Oh my gosh, is that a Pacman Babybel?? I'm so using that idea!
I've been tempted to give the Bento lunches a try this year, at least for the first few weeks of school. I can imagine they're a pretty good boost to a child's mood during the day! :)

Oh, I hope he LOVES kindergarten. Don't be scared, I cried the first few days that my daughter was at school, but it passes!
